It's made from silicon carbide (SiC) ceramics that are harder and lighter than alumina ceramics. The Mark 2 plate has incorporated an anti-spall plate in the front, which eliminates spalling of ceramic shards which could injure the wearer.

It also has expanded ceramic coverage of 9.5x11.5 which is 16% more than the previous version. The new Mark 2 plates weigh in at mere 4.5 lbs vs 7 lbs that our competitors offer. We tested them with 2 rounds of 7.62 NATO M80, 2 rounds of 5.56 M193 and 2 rounds of 5.56 M855.

None of them penetrated the plate. Backface deformation is 1/4 for 5.56, even when the green tip struck right next to the edge. For 7.62, the deformation was around 1/2" to 3/4". Material: SiC Ceramic + Polyethylene (UHMWPE). This model complies with NIJ Standard-0101.06 for Ballistic Resistance of Body Armor.
